The Story
From artist to Cincinnati’s most trusted makeup artist-here’s how I found my calling in beauty
How It All Started!
I’ve always been that friend—you know, the one doing everyone’s makeup before going out and giving unsolicited (but appreciated!) style advice. But a professional makeup artist? That was never on my radar.
Rewind to 2003 before social media barely existed and makeup artistry was only for film and theatre in big cities like NYC or LA. This midwestern girl studying fine art in Indiana had no idea what was ahead…
My 4 years at DePauw University in Greencastle, IN were so formative with so many wonderful experiences – from learning to silver smith in NM where Georgia O’Keefe created her masterpieces, to interning in New York getting to work with several famous artists (got to light Chuck Close’s cigarette) These experiences weren’t just cool party stories…they shaped my foundation as an artist and not only taught me how to see light, shadow, and composition—but to create at the highest level.
After college, I worked at Saks Fifth Avenue in Charleston, SC—daydreaming about becoming a celebrity stylist while, in reality, folding A LOT of jeans. (Think it’s the height of True religion jeans and The Simple Life) Despite the less-than-glamorous retail side, I quickly learned the true art of client service and how to create a luxury experience- with a little Southern charm of course.
The Moment That Changed it All
When I eventually moved back home to Ohio and transferred to the slower-paced Cincinnati Saks store, I found myself spending a lot of time at the makeup counter. One of the Trish McEvoy artists noticed me hanging around a lot and playing with all of the products, and said, “Have you ever thought about doing makeup?” The question floored me and I felt like I got a secret invite to the glamorous world of beauty—a moment that changed the entire trajectory of my career.
Learning from one of the last privately owned luxury beauty brands in an industry dominated by mega-corporations has been the coolest experience. She’s hands-on, boldly independent, and refuses to compromise her vision. I didn’t realize it then, but joining her team would change my life forever and teach me so much about the pursuit of excellence, educating and empowering women and through makeup. Working for Trish McEvoy truly led me to my purpose of personalized artistry.
Creating Leyla Shay Beauty
Starting my own business felt like the natural next step after many years of learning from my peers and mentors. Cincinnati’s wedding scene is booming, and I feel honored to be part of my clients’ most important days.
But it’s not just about the big moments, I love helping women simplify their routines and feel confident with their everyday makeup. There’s something magical about watching someone’s face light up when they finally master something they’ve been struggling with.
My Why
Leyla Shay Beauty brings together everything I love: creativity, genuine connection, and helping people see the beauty in themselves.
Whether I’m getting a bride ready to walk down the aisle or teaching a busy mom how to do a five-minute face, My Why is knowing I’ve helped someone feel more confident and radiant in their own skin.
